The team behind the technology

It takes a team to make a difference

Optoacoustic imaging is a very complex field, both from a technology and applications perspective. Components to master include lasers, optics, ultrasound detectors, electronics, and, equally important, a breadth of algorithms for quantitative image reconstruction and spectral analysis. In order to successfully translate the technology from its experimental state in a research lab to a robust product used by scientists and medical doctors, iThera Medical has assembled an international and interdisciplinary team of scientists and developers, ranging from engineers and physicists to biologists and medical doctors.

Headed by the co-founder and CEO Christian Wiest and the CCO Philipp Bell, the company has developed from a handful of scientists to a group of more than 40 employees.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Christian has an academic background in engineering and business. He spent several years at McKinsey, where he consulted clients in high tech and healthcare industries. He then transitioned into a commercial role at GE Healthcare which he left in 2010 to co-found iThera Medical. He is responsible for strategy, sales & marketing, and R&D.

Chief Commercial Officer (CCO)

Philipp joined the team in 2011 as CCO responsible for finance and operations after co-founding and/or advising several high-tech startups in the US. Before his startup activities he was a consultant for McKinsey, working with leading high-tech and telecommunications companies. Philipp holds an MBA and a Ph.D. in Business.

Neal Burton

Neal received his PhD in 2008 in toxicology from Johns Hopkins. His work focused on neurochemical biomarkers and molecular imaging in preclinical models of neuro-degeneration. After a post-doc at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he joined iThera in 2010 as an Application Specialist. Today he leads the Applications Team.

Business Development

Nina Dahlhaus

Nina received her PhD in biophysics from the University of Heidelberg on time-resolved fluorescent microscopy techniques. Prior to joining the company in 2013, she worked as a consultant at McKinsey mostly focused on healthcare. Nina is responsible for business development and market access.

Sales Europe

Tim Devling

Tim started his career as a researcher in the field of preclinical oncology before moving onto application support roles within the area of optical imaging. Transitioning to sales management, he ultimately headed up UK national sales at Caliper Life Sciences before joining iThera in 2012 to head up European sales and distributor management.

Sales America

Tullio Giannitti

Tullio has an academic background in business. Prior to joining iThera Medical in 2012, he held sales positions at PerkinElmer and Carestream Molecular Imaging, where he nurtured key relationships and developed strategic partnerships that led to significant revenue growth. He is responsible for North American business operations. management, sales & marketing.

System engineering

Josef Konradl

Josef has a background in electrical engineering from TU Munich. In 2009 he joined the group of Vasilis Ntziachristos and Daniel Razansky to develop the first preclinical MSOT imaging system. He transitioned to iThera Medical in 2011, where he is now leading hardware development, system integration, service and production.

Algorithm R&D

Stefan Morscher

Stefan graduated from the electrical engineering faculty at TUM in 2011 with his master thesis on Multispectral Unmixing in Photoacoustics. He then transitioned to iThera Medical, where he today leads R&D activities, focusing on new algorithms, spanning from signal acquisition to image reconstruction and spectral analysis.

Software development

Ratko Petrovic

Ratko has an academic background in electrical and biomedical engineering. Before joining iThera, he spent several years developing software and innovative devices in the fields electro-cardiology (ECG), electro-encephalography (EEG), and brain-computer interfacing. Since 2018 he is responsible for Software development.

Quality Management & Regulatory Affairs

Ingmar Thiemann

Ingmar brings more than 15 years of medical device experience in R&D, Product Management and Quality Management. Prior to joining iThera, Ingmar worked at Brainlab AG and Jan Medical Inc., where he was in charge of international project management and regulatory product clearances. Ingmar is responsible for Regulatory Affairs and Quality at iThera Medical.
